- Invented by a Biochemist: Rolfing was developed by Ida P. Rolf, who held a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Columbia University, an uncommon origin for a bodywork method. Dr. Rolf was a woman ahead of her time.
- The Ten-Session Protocol: Known as “the recipe,” Rolfing typically involves a structured series of ten sessions aimed at progressively realigning the body. In my practice I see this process realistically take between 10-15 sessions. It depends on your body and the experiences you’ve been through with it.
- Emotional Release: Rolfing therapists know that the physical work of Rolfing can lead to emotional catharsis, suggesting a link between physical structure and emotional health. Your body remembers every experience you have lived through.
- Unique Body Mapping: Rolfing involves a detailed “body mapping” where practitioners assess and work on specific areas to encourage structural balance, a process unique to this method. As Certified Rolfers we are always considering the structure in front of us. Not only is your body unique but it is different each time we meet. We evaluate and assess with each treatment.
- Not Only for Pain: While many seek Rolfing for pain relief, it’s also pursued for enhancing posture, athletic performance, and as a stress-relief method. I can tell you since I started practicing in 2016, while most people come for pain, they stay for pleasure. Rolfing can be a little uncomfortable in the beginning. My clients will often say that it ‘hurts so good’. As time goes on they will inevitably come for a session and remember the discomfort from years ago and be shocked at how pleasurable Rolfing is to them now.
- Influenced Other Therapies: The teachings of Ida Rolf have influenced other bodywork practices, particularly in the development of myofascial release techniques. We are really the original fascial workers. Although other modalities have touched on the fascia Rolfers are really the first to make it their specialty.
- Popularity Fluctuations: After a peak in the 1970s, Rolfing experienced a resurgence in the 2010s, bolstered by media endorsements on platforms like “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” Rolfing is often referred to as an unfortunately well kept secret.
- Worldwide Practice: Rolfing has a global presence with practitioners in over 35 countries, reflecting its international appeal and acceptance in alternative health circles. People who have experienced Rolfing often end up coming back throughout the rest of their lives.
- Alternative to Surgery: Rolfing has been credited with helping some individuals avoid surgery for conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome, by improving structural alignment. Having a practice in Ottawa for many years (Lots of government desk workers) this was something I’ve worked with frequently. People often find relief after just one treatment, although sometimes more are necessary.
- Holistic Approach: Rolfing aims at a holistic improvement of the body’s function, focusing on the relationship between structure, gravity, and movement, which is quite unique in the realm of bodywork. I have found the educational piece of Rolfing is one of the reasons this work is known for it’s longer lasting results. When you can better understand what is happening in your body you are able to influence your future behaviours to prevent ending up in the same trouble again.
