Wellness Wednesday: Unclench Your Jaw

Quick check: are your teeth touching right now? Is your tongue pressed against the roof of your mouth? Most of us hold tension in our jaw without noticing, especially when we’re focused, stressed or staring at a screen. That tension doesn’t stay put. It can spread to your neck, shoulders and even your head.

Try this two-minute jaw release:

  1. Let your teeth part. Keep your lips lightly closed, but let a little space open between your back teeth.
  2. Rest your tongue. Let it soften and settle on the floor of your mouth, like it’s melting.
  3. Slow open, slow close. Let your jaw drop open slowly, as if it’s heavy, then close it just as slowly. Repeat 5 times.
  4. Warm hands. Rub your palms together, then rest them on your cheeks in front of your ears. Breathe slowly for 30 seconds.
  5. Notice. Do your shoulders feel any different? Your neck?

A soft jaw invites the rest of the body to let go. Try checking in with your jaw every time you get in the car or open your laptop this week.

Move gently, and skip anything that hurts. Questions about jaw or neck tension?
